Akashi Kaikyo Bridge
The longest suspended bridge in the world which connects Kobe, Hyogo and Awaji, and overlooks Akashi-Kaikyo is 3,911 m in length. A beautiful appearance with a design that changes when lit up at night or depending on the time, it produces a mystical view.
Esaki lighthouse
The low form of the stone lighthouse constructed during the early part of the Meiji period is lovely. The "Awaji Sunset Line" running along the western coastline of the island is breathtaking. You can enjoy a view of the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge.
Hompukuji Water Temple
An old temple allegedly built in the Heian period. Osaka Bay can be viewed from inside the premises. The modern, concrete exterior of Hompuku Temple was designed by Tadao Ando, a modern world-class architect. The Yakushi Nyorai diety statue has been designated as an important cultural asset of Awaji city.
Izanagi-jingu Shrine
Izanagi and Izanami, who achieved the gigantic feat of giving birth to Japan and who appear in "Kojiki" and "Kuni-umi" at the beginning of "Nihon Shoki", are enshrined here. The two dieties reside in sacred 900 year-old camphor trees on the premises which are believed to be auspicious for family harmony, safe childbirths and matchmaking.
Eshima Island
An island floating on the northern end of Awaji, this is "Onokorojima", one of the traditional places that appear in the nation origin myth. It is thought that the natural beauty carved out by the many years of exposure to winds and waves is reflected in Onokorojima, with Akashi-Kaikyo in the background, where fishermen divers made their livelihood.
Taga beach
Its shoals and beautiful sand beaches are popular for families and female travelers. In addition to summer bathing, the sinking sunset over Harimanada is optimal for walks. The "sound and light" adjacent to Taganohama Park is the theme of this bathing resort.
Ishida Rice terraces
The rice terrace view of the Ishida district on the west coast stretching across the wide valley reminds us of the endeavours of predecessors. The diverse topographical rice paddies create beautiful patterns against the evening sun.
Kareki Shrine
"Kareki Shrine is situated along the coastline. According to the Nihon Shoki, a bundle of muskwood washed up in the summer of Suiko 3 (595 AD) and a nice fragrance spread over the entire area when the islanders burned it.
Hokudan Earthquake Memorial Park
A fault which appeared after the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995 is preserved and displayed here unchanged. You can learn about the importance of being prepared for future earthquakes. You can experience the difference between the vibrations during the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake and the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake in the Earthquake Zone room.
Gossakaito Archeological Site
The Gossakaito site was a village where ironware was produced in the latter part of the Yayoi period between 1,800-1,900 years ago. The site is considered highly valuable and has been designated as a national heritage site since you can learn in detail about how ironware was created during that period.
Awajihanasajiki Park
Awaji Hanasajiki' is a famous flower spot on this island known for its flowers and was established in Hyogo prefecture in April 1999. Seasonal flowers broadly cover the plateau of a hilly region in the northern part of Awaji, which smoothly extends between 235-298m above sea level.
Akashi Kaikyo National Government Park
Within the approximately 40ha park, seasonal flowers and the largest playground in the Kansai region can be found and enjoyed by children and adults alike. The peak season for tulips is spring, sunflowers in the summer, cosmos in the fall, snow roses in the winter and rapeseed blossoms bloom in cold weather.
Awaji Sand lance fishing
Sand lances, a feature of spring in Setonaikai, reach their peak from March to April. Particularly small sand lances are called kona" and treasured on Awaji. Kugini, sand lances simmered in soy sauce using these "kona", is particularly famous."
